Figured I'd toss this in here for those who don't know this already.

About how Darkside & lightside works:

They are calculated separately, with a max of 10k light and 10k dark at the same time. However, your standing is derived from subtracting these with each other, so if you had both at 10k your standing would be 0 (ie, neutral).

When one of the sides gets to 10k, any additional points you accumulate for it will delete points of the opposing side. This means that if you have 10k lightside and 10k darkside (standing of 0) and score 100 lightside points from a conversation cutscene, you would then still only have 10k lightside but your darkside would've been reduced to 9900 (making your standing 100 points towards the light)

What does this mean in practice?

Well, basically that any conversation "mistakes" you've made during levelling can be corrected once you're nearing the endgame. Additionally, you need not fear taking Lightside diplomacy missions if you're going Dark. Just keep making choices that net you the side-points you want, and you will definitely end up with a level5 light/darkside standing eventually.
